Speaker: Alison Devonshire Grad Dip PCVN RVN

Alison Qualified as a RVN in 2001 and went on to complete the RVC Graduate Diploma in Professional and Clinical Veterinary Nursing in 2012.  She has just completed a Masters in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia through Edinburgh University and will graduate this Summer. She is the lead Anaesthesia and Ophthalmology Nurse at Debenham Vet Practice in Suffolk.

Lecture Synopsis:

With the dramatic increase in ownership of brachycephalic breed dogs in the UK, vet practices are treating these dogs for both routine procedure, surgery and diseases relating to their anatomic conformation.  With this, veterinary nurses will play a crucial role in their care and support throughout their anaesthesia and recovery period. This talk will discuss the specific nursing considerations for these patients and how we can make sure we are providing the best care possible in what can sometimes be challenging cases to manage.

Learning Points:

  • Anatomical conformation of brachy breeds and how this might affect anaesthesia requirements.
  • Hospitalisation and environmental considerations.
  • Observations and what to have ready for emergencies.
  • Managing the airway and ventilation.

East Anglia BVNA Advocate:

Kay Eminson BSc(hons) RVN, CERT VNES

Having qualified in 2009 Kay has been fortunate to work in a variety of set ups and nursed everything from cow caesarians to total hip replacements, practice management and budgeting to surgical scrub nurse in cataracts. She developed an interest in quality improvement and in 2020 was highly commended in the RCVS QI awards for her project on dental analgesia. When she is not at work and weather permits she challenges herself by learning how to sail. She enjoys being out on the water whether that be on her paddleboard or for a cold water dip. At home she has a black labrador Milo and Berlioz the cat, her current chicken count is 6 rescues who she is enjoying learning more about.
