Krka UK and Tim Nuttall launch podcasts on antimicrobial stewardship in companion animal practice

Krka UK’s Animal Health Team has launched a new podcast series focused on antimicrobial stewardship in companion animal practice. Featuring expert insight from RCVS Specialist in Veterinary Dermatology, Professor Tim Nuttall, the three-part series explores practical strategies to support responsible antibiotic use in practice. Topics include applying the principles of antimicrobial stewardship (AMS), making confident diagnostic and prescribing decisions, and managing client expectations around antibiotic use within practice.

The podcast series is available to stream here.

In the first episode, Professor Nuttall explores how to apply the principles of AMS in the consulting room, starting with recognising when antibiotics are genuinely needed. He highlights the role of clinical signs and cytology in guiding diagnosis and treatment decisions, while also emphasising the risks of unnecessary prescribing. The discussion also covers when empirical antibiotic use may be appropriate and how to ensure these decisions are justified.

Each episode offers practical, evidence-based insights that can be easily implemented in general practice. Professor Nuttall is joined by Krka’s Technical Veterinary Adviser, Renzo Di Florio, as they discuss how vets can confirm infection, select appropriate antibiotics and manage client expectations with confidence. Together, they share practical advice on embedding AMS into day-to-day workflows.

Professor Nuttall explains that antimicrobial resistance is one of the most pressing issues of our time, saying, “If we don’t preserve the efficacy of these drugs for the future, we are going to see a crisis and possibly be moving into a post-antibiotic era. And this is a true One Health problem.”

Krka is committed to supporting veterinary professionals with practical tools to help address this global challenge. The podcast series is designed to help vets at every stage of their career apply antimicrobial stewardship principles with confidence. The series is accompanied by downloadable Vet2Vet Insights information sheets that summarise the key take-home messages from each episode. Together, these resources offer an accessible and actionable approach to responsible antibiotic use in small animal practice.
