The Vetlexicon flock expands with the newest additional species: Avis – available to use for free during June

Vetlexicon, the world’s leading online peer-reviewed veterinary reference resource for clinical point of care, is excited to announce its latest addition, Avis, launched at the BVA Live Conference in Birmingham on 6-7th June and is now available on the Vetlexicon website. This new service, dedicated to avian species, currently focuses on domestic poultry flocks (backyard chickens) of 1,000 birds or less and boasts an impressive collection of over 350 pieces of expertly curated content.

With the addition of Avis, Vetlexicon continues its mission to provide comprehensive, up-to-date clinical information to veterinary professionals around the globe to support their diagnostic and treatment decision-making in domestic poultry, which make up 70% of the global bird population biomass. Avian health is an increasingly important field within veterinary medicine, and Vetlexicon’s latest expansion ensures that veterinarians have access to the essential resources needed to deliver the highest standard of care for bird species.

Key Features of Vetlexicon Avis:

  • Extensive Content Library: Avis hosts over 350 articles, images, client factsheets, and diagnostic trees covering a wide range of categories pertinent to avian health, including diseases, diagnostic techniques, medications, legislation and parasitology.
  • Focus on Domestic Poultry: The current content primarily addresses the needs of domestic poultry, providing in-depth information on common health issues, management practices, and veterinary procedures.
  • Expert Contributions: The content on Avis is authored and reviewed by leading avian veterinary specialists, ensuring the information is both accurate and practical for clinical use. This includes St David’s Poultry Team, established in 2006, that combines over 350 years of poultry veterinary experience. The team work with a large proportion of the UK and Ireland broiler industry and have responsibility for the majority of layers across the UK.
  • User-Friendly Interface: Like all Vetlexicon species, Avis is designed with an intuitive interface that makes finding and utilizing information quick and easy for busy practitioners.

This addition complements Vetlexicon’s extensive range of modules covering various other species, making it the go-to resource for veterinary professionals worldwide for their clinical workflow.

Vetstream CEO, Dr Mark Johnston MRCVS said,

“Avian flu and its additional potential risks to other species and also in many other species, as well as the risks to human health posed by contaminated eggs and chicken in the foodchain make the provision of Avis very timely. With the recent human fatality from H5N2 the need for understanding about bird diseases and their impact is clearly shown.

We are really delighted to have worked with such a strong contribution from the St David’s Poultry Team whose experience in commercial flocks is provided to veterinarians being presented with smaller flocks and bringing hands on training for vets being presented with domestic poultry via The Chicken Vet which provide selected products and veterinary advice online for the backyard enthusiast, fancy fowl and small flock keeper. We have also had significant additional contributions for this launch edition of Avis across a broad range of poultry veterinary expertise. We want as many people as possible to take Avis for a “test flight” and so will be providing free access to all Vetlexicon subscribers for the month of June”

Ben South BSc (Hons) BVetMed PGCertVPS CertAVP MRCVS and St David’s Poultry Team & The Chicken Vet,

“I am delighted to have been involved in the development of the new avian resource for Vetlexicon. I’ve worked in the poultry sector for many years and this includes taking the lead role in teaching small animal practitioners through our associated business, The Chicken Vet. I understand how important knowledge sharing is to the veterinary profession, especially with avian medicine as we see a steady rise in backyard poultry keepers in the UK.

I look forward to continuing to share and support vets with their avian health and husbandry knowledge and help evolve and keep current the content in the Vetlexicon platform.”

“I am thrilled to be a contributor to Vetlexicon’s backyard poultry series. With the rapid growth in backyard poultry ownership, it is critical for resources to be widely available. The Vetlexicon’s backyard poultry series is a game changer for general practice veterinarians looking to become more comfortable with backyard poultry.”

“Vetlexicon’s backyard poultry series is an up-to-date, easily accessible resource which is simple to navigate. Information ranges from concise summaries to detailed articles covering all aspects of backyard poultry medicine and surgery. It is an invaluable resource for the general practitioner”.

Vicki Baldrey, Beaumont Sainsbury Animal Hospital, RVC, UK

Vetlexicon’s backyard poultry series is a really useful, rapidly accessible resource with a wide range of informative and practical resources for general practice vets.

As always, care must be taken to formulate an accurate prioritised problem list to narrow down the most likely differential diagnoses. Otherwise, vets inexperienced with poultry may be distracted by the weird and wonderful from what’s commonly common.”
