Speakers:

Speaker: Daniel Bloomer BSc(Hons), PGDip(Dist) (Anaesthesia & Analgesia), DipVN RVN

Daniel has worked in a variety of first opinion practices including hospital settings before moving to referral practice to pursue further training in advanced anaesthesia and critical care. He has attained a Postgraduate Diploma in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia from the University of Edinburgh and has worked at Bristol Vet Specialists as part of the Anaesthesia Department and now as a member of the Intensive Care Unit team where he enjoys managing complex patients.

Session 1: Beyond the Incision: The Impact of Laparoscopy on General Anaesthesia

Synopsis:

The use of laparoscopy is becoming ever more common in veterinary practice to perform a variety of ‘keyhole’ surgical procedures due to their association with reduced pain and a more rapid recovery time. Along with this surgical technique comes some unique anaesthetic challenges that require adjustments to our anaesthetic monitoring strategies, and careful management to ensure an optimal patient outcome.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn about the impact of laparoscopy on patient physiology
  • Understand the implications of laparoscopy for anaesthetic monitoring
  • Know how to manage anaesthesia in patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery

Session 2: Perfusion Priorities: Balancing Blood Pressure, Fluid Losses and NSAID Safety

Synopsis:

Maintaining perfusion to vital organs such as the brain and kidneys is crucial during general anaesthesia and procedures where fluid losses can occur, and we regularly use fluid therapy to counter these losses and maintain blood pressure in our patients. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories are a valuable component of multimodal analgesia, however their perioperative use is limited by hypovolaemia and hypotension. Understanding how to balance these elements is key to aligning pain management with patient safety.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the relationship between organ perfusion and general anaesthesia
  • Learn how to assess fluid losses associated with surgical procedures and general anaesthesia
  • Understand the challenges of NSAID administration in the perioperative period and how to approach their use

Speaker: Elora-Dane Hurcomb DipRVN Cert E&CC

Elora qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse in 2018 working after working in a busy mixed animal practice. She gained a certificate in Emergency & Critical Care whilst working in referral nursing in early 2022. She joined Bristol Vet Specialists in 2022 as part of the anaesthesia team and became Senior Anaesthesia Nurse in 2023. Elora is currently working towards her VTS in Anaesthesia. Elora is passionate about patient welfare and endorsing the RVN role. She is up for a challenge and loves learning. As a self-confessed cat lady, she strongly believes no cat is aggressive, just misunderstood.

Session 1: Blood Gas/acid base

Synopsis:

This lecture will provide foundational and clinically applicable understanding of blood gas analysis and acid base disorders. Starting with definitions, reference ranges and important parameters and moving on to the clinical significance of these parameters and relating them to some case examples.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand definition of Blood gas & acid base
  • Learn to interpret the results
  • Understand the clinical significance
  • Apply this to inpatients and anaesthetised patients

Session 2: Pre-anaesthesia case planning and patient management

Synopsis:

This lecture will focus on the process of a systematic approach to evaluating and preparing for patients prior to anaesthesia. Optimising patient safety, minimising risk and guiding contextualised tailor-made care. From pre-anaesthesia assessment, patient consideration, procedure consideration and anaesthesia consideration to physical examination, ASA risk classification and protocol selection.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand a systematic approach to tailor made care
  • Understand the importance of decision making based on specific patient, procedure and anaesthesia considerations
  • Apply this knowledge to clinical decision making for anaesthesia protocol
