BVNA to highlight “diamonds” in the VN profession during Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month 2025

Every year during May, the veterinary profession recognises Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month (VNAM), proudly led by the British Veterinary Nursing Association (BVNA) since 2004. In the association’s 60th year, the campaign continues a theme of ‘Progression’ – reflecting the progress made by the VN profession in the past 60 years, and sharing ambitions for where it could continue to grow in the future.

The campaign aims to champion veterinary nurses, raising awareness of their important role within animal welfare amongst the public. To maximise the spread of awareness to the public, BVNA invites every member of the veterinary profession, along with pet owners and caregivers, to support the campaign.

How will you be raising awareness of veterinary nursing this month?

You can help us to champion veterinary nurses throughout VNAM in the following ways:

  • Follow BVNA on social media, and share posts and content with your practice/workplace, family, friends and practice clients – including the hashtags; #VNAM2025 | #WhatVNsDo | #Shinebrightlikeadiamond
  • Enter BVNA’s VNAM competition, and encourage your practice/workplace team, family and friends, and practice clients to get involved
  • Get creative with your own ideas, and let us know via bvna@bvna.co.uk how you are putting a spotlight on your veterinary nursing colleagues this month

VNAM 2025 Competition – “Who is the diamond in your practice?”

BVNA’s popular annual VNAM competition makes a return once again, and is taking on a special theme during BVNA’s diamond anniversary year. This year’s competition invites nominations of individual SVNs or RVNs, or whole veterinary nursing teams, and why they are “the diamond in your practice”.

Simply submit evidence of who you are nominating and why – whether that’s using photos, posters, videos, or any other format – which will also be shared on our social media pages throughout May.

Two winners and two runners-up will be selected – Each winning either a £100 or £50 Love2Shop voucher.

Nominations are invited from:

  • Individuals, veterinary nursing teams or whole practice/workplace teams
  • Friends and family outside of practice
  • Pet owners and caregivers

Visit our website for more information and competition rules.

Good luck – and we can’t wait to see all of your nominations!

Message from BVNA President, Lyndsay Hughes:

“I am delighted to launch VNAM for another year, and even more so as we mark BVNA’s diamond 60th anniversary since the association was founded. The progression of veterinary nursing as a profession has very much been shaped by trailblazers in BVNA’s history; those who have not been afraid to stand up for fellow veterinary nurses in order to influence positive change. Whilst VNAM recognises and celebrates the veterinary nursing profession of today, we’re also celebrating and thanking those individuals who worked tirelessly to get us here.

“BVNA fundamentally believes that, as a skilled, professional and caring workforce, veterinary nurses fully deserve to be championed and for their role to be better understood by the public. This is especially important as BVNA is continuing to push towards much needed legislative change; for protection of our title, proper utilisation of our training and skillsets, and an even greater contribution to animal welfare. We’re urging everyone across the veterinary profession, in clinical or non-clinical settings, to support the campaign and highlight just how important veterinary nurses are – to animal welfare, to your team, and to your business.

“VNAM provides us all with the opportunity to stand up and be proud of our profession – and for veterinary colleagues working alongside SVNs and RVNs to recognise our contributions too. We look forward to celebrating VNAM once again this year and seeing all the creative ways that veterinary teams are educating the public about our incredible profession. I hope this year’s VNAM gives veterinary nurses everywhere the same boost of energy and inspiration that it always does for me.”
