Lecture Synopsis:

This presentation on Angiostrongylus vasorum will begin with an overview of the parasite and how it differs from other respiratory parasites commonly seen in dogs, followed by a brief discussion of its distribution and epidemiology within the UK.  Ways in which the parasite may arise during nursing consultations, will then be explored, including considerations for risk assessment and prevention strategies. The presentation will then focus on the clinical signs associated with this lungworm, highlighting the different groups of clinical signs that may aid recognition in practice. Subsequently, the role of A. vasorum in preoperative patients will be discussed. Finally, the presentation will cover diagnostic approaches, including in-house testing, treatment options, and the importance of ongoing prevention strategies.

Learning Points:

1. Understand prevention and risk assessment strategies for Angiostrongylus vasorum.

2. Recognise the common presenting clinical signs and disease patterns associated with A. vasorum infection in practice.

3. Understand the methods available to diagnose Angiostrongylus vasorum, including in-house testing options.
