Speaker: Joseph Bend RVN, BSc(Hons), PGCert, NCert(Dent) 

Joseph is the Surgical Lead Nurse at a small animal hospital in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, where he oversees all aspects of surgical nursing, anaesthesia, diagnostic imaging and dentistry. Joseph holds a Nursing Certificate in Dentistry which he has utilised in developing nurse led dental assessments under anaesthesia. This is part of a wider focus on a dedicated daily nurse procedure service in his practice that also sees his RVN colleagues conduct nurse lead procedures including CT scans and minor surgical procedures. In 2023, his colleagues successfully nominated him as part of the London Vet Show’s Thirty under 30 Class of 2023 and his most recent endeavours have seen him complete his postgraduate certificate in Veterinary Education, Coaching and Leadership.

 Lecture Synopsis:

Veterinary nurses are increasingly involved in the placement and management of urinary catheters in feline urethral obstruction cases. This session focuses on the practical skills, resource selection, and troubleshooting required to confidently support these patients, from relieving the obstruction through to post-operative nursing care. Join us to explore the challenges, complications, and rewarding impact nurses can have on the outcome of the blocked cat.

1. Describe the veterinary nurse’s role in urinary catheter placement and management in obstructed feline patients.
2. Implement practical strategies to successfully place and secure urinary catheters while minimising complications.
3. Confidently troubleshoot common challenges encountered during catheterisation and hospitalisation.
