The British Veterinary Dental Association and The British Veterinary Nursing Association have joined forces again to offer a bite sized course worth 9 hours of CPD!

Please note that the Course content is currently under review, therefore the details below may be subject to slight changes.

Summary of course content

 Module 1 learning outcomes:

  • Understand the anatomy and physiology of the oral and dental tissues in mammals
  • Understand the requirement for dental charting and the different methods of dental charting

Summary of learning activities:

  • Webinar – Dental and oral anatomy, accompanied by comprehensive revision notes
  • Instructional notes/videos for carrying out oral examinations a) in a conscious animal, b) under GA and with the use of a dental chart
  • Activity – complete a dental and anaesthetic chart for 1 feline and 1 canine patient
  • End of module test – MCQ based assessment which learners must pass with 70% to progress to next module

Module 2 learning outcomes:

  • Introduction to periodontal disease and the different stages
  • Understand the treatment options for the different stages of periodontal disease
  • Communicate with peers and clients

Summary of learning activities:

  • Webinar – Periodontal disease
  • Instructional notes for pre-GA patient assessment and preparation, and care of a patient under GA to include ET tubes
  • Instructional video for carrying out a dental scale and polish
  • Notes/diagrams covering recognition of absent teeth, crown fracture, worn teeth, discoloured teeth, tooth resorption, malocclusion, retained deciduous teeth, ulceration, masses and caries
  • End of module test – MCQ based assessment which learners must pass with 70% to progress to next module

 

Module 3 learning outcomes:

  • Effectively communicate preventative oral care options
  • Be familiar with key products available to aid oral health
  • Understand safe use of toys

Summary of learning activities:

  • Webinar – Home care
  • Instructional notes and videos for carrying out oral care nurse consultations on canine and feline patients
  • Instructional notes for improving client compliance
  • Use of disclosing products
  • Instructional videos/notes on brushing teeth in conscious dog and cat
  • End of module test – MCQ based assessment which learners must pass with 70% to progress to next module

 

Module 4 learning outcomes:

  • Develop a basic understanding of how to use the equipment in the dental area
  • Recognise the principles of ergonomics, personal safety and efficiency when performing and/or assisting with dental procedures
  • Recognise equipment and consumable requirements
  • Develop a program to maintain instruments and equipment
  • Manage consumable requirements for commonly performed procedures

Summary of learning activities:

  • Instrument care – notes on basic equipment required for dental procedures, powered instruments and their care/maintenance/lubrication, dental instruments required for examination, calculus removal and extraction, consumables, maintaining/sharpening hand instruments
  • Summary of PPE requirements
  • End of module test – MCQ based assessment which learners must pass with 70% to progress to next module

 Final assessment:

  • MCQ examination – learners must pass with 70% to pass course overall and receive certificate and badge
