Sepsis in Dogs and Cats

Recognising and reacting to the early signs and symptoms of sepsis can increase the rates of survival to discharge. Emphasis on early staging and quick initiation of treatment has become more and more prevalent with each sepsis guideline released. This comprehensive course will take a look at the in-depth pathogenesis and mechanisms of sepsis, the diagnostic approach to these patients, as well as discussion of treatment and its importance to survival rates.
Module 1. Mechanisms & Pathogenesis; Learning about sepsis, septic shock, MODS, CARS, MARS and the in-depth pathophysiology of the immune response seen in sepsis.
Module 2. Mechanisms & Pathogenesis 2; Review of bodily systems affected by sepsis (i.e. acute kidney injury/ RAAS activation, cardio-respiratory failure/ acute respiratory distress syndrome)
Module 3. Clinical Manifestations & Diagnostics; Biomarkers, sepsis markers, clinical diagnostic tools, SOFA scoring
Module 4. Treatment Bundles; Resuscitation and early goal directed fluid therapy, early use of antibiosis, assessment using SOFA scoring, contraindications of treatment
Module 5. Nursing Considerations; i.e. pain scoring & management, nutrition, physical therapy, wound care, placement of central lines, ECG reading
Module 6. Two interactive cases
