Lecture Synopsis:

This lecture explores the principles of veterinary antimicrobial stewardship in wound care, with a focus on reducing reliance on systemic antibiotics. It highlights the importance of effective bioburden and biofilm management through adjunctive strategies, including thorough wound debridement and appropriate lavage techniques. Attendees will gain insight into the use of antimicrobial lavage solutions, topical wound care products, and dressing selection to support infection control and promote optimal healing. The session will provide practical, evidence-based approaches to help veterinary professionals make informed, responsible decisions in wound management while contributing to the global effort to combat antimicrobial resistance.

Learning Points:

  • Understand the role of antimicrobial stewardship in veterinary wound care and the impact of responsible antimicrobial use on combating resistance.
  • Recognise the importance of effective wound debridement and lavage in reducing bioburden and disrupting biofilms without over-reliance on systemic antibiotics.
