Lecture Synopsis:

On this lecture we will be focusing on the nurses role in ottits externa. Nurses can play a big role in dermatology and otitis is commonly seen in general practice.

We will explore the techniques for sampling ears for parasites and infection. We’ll then cover microscopy and cytology examination to identify any potential significant findings you may see.

We will briefly discuss ear swabs for sensitivity and culture and the benefits of performing these.

We will go through a range of ear products available and discuss their usefulness in certain situations/conditions and finally, look at video-otoendoscopy, how to set up, performing and assisting with the procedure and follow up.

Learning Points:

  1. Gain confidence with cytology
  2. Understand what products can be used for certain conditions
  3. Feel more confident assisting and helping perform video-otoendscopy (ear flushes)
