Joy Shutt BSc(Hons) RVN C-SQP DipNCS(RVNCons) & BVNA Advocate

Joy is part of a team of BVNA Advocates, organising CPD for veterinary nurses, both online and in her part of North Wales. She is the Head Nurse and Nurse Clinic Lead in a first opinion practice, with a diploma in veterinary nurse consulting. She enjoys everything cats and maintains her practice’s silver level Cat Friendly Clinic accreditation. Joy also writes for veterinary publications and is a veterinary nurse course assessor for Colourful CPD.

Weighing in on Pet Obesity

Pet obesity is an ever-growing problem where nurses can have a real impact. Running well structured clinics and having confidence when making recommendations will increase the chance of success, as well as fuelling job satisfaction. This session will provide the basis for each stage of the clinic, whilst remembering that each individual pet will benefit from a tailored approach. The client-nurse bond that develops will be important throughout the pet’s life, as obesity care does not stop when the target weight is reached.

Courtney Scales – DipVN NCert(Anaesth) PgCertVAA RVN

Courtney is originally from New Zealand, where she trained and qualified. She began her career in veterinary nursing in 2007 and worked in multiple clinics in New Zealand and Australia, before moving to the United Kingdom in 2016 to pursue anaesthesia nursing. Courtney started Veterinary Anursethesia on various social media platforms throughout her studies and career to share anaesthesia tips with the veterinary community. She has written several journal articles and textbook chapters and enjoys face-to-face speaking about the practical side of anaesthesia monitoring in practice, at CPD events and national congresses.

Breathe Easy: An Overview of Airway Management, Breathing Systems and Manual Ventilation

11.30 – 12.30

Although the intubation itself is usually performed by a veterinary surgeon, the RVN is mainly responsible for preparing the patient for intubation and extubation. Despite receiving training in the skill, we frequently neglect to put it into practice. This lecture covers the role of the veterinary nurse when preparing and performing orotracheal intubation, and their role in an airway emergency. The proper use of a laryngoscope will also be discussed and demonstrated.

The anatomy of the airway will also be covered, as well as techniques, airway device and breathing system selection, leak testing of breathing systems, cuff inflation techniques, and how capnography can be used to troubleshoot endotracheal tube or airway complications, monitor for hypercapnia, and describe manual ventilation techniques.

1. Utilise different methods and techniques to secure the airway

2. Understand how individual breathing systems work and how to select an appropriate system for your        patient

3. Provide manual ventilation safely to a patient under anaesthesia

Faye Goddard – RVN NCertECC NCertAnBeh 

Faye started nursing 17 years ago as an auxiliary nurse and worked her way up to clinical nursing manager over this time. Faye qualified in 2014 and went on to complete certificates in animal behaviour and ECC. In 2022, Faye left her full-time role to focus on other aspects of her nursing career. She began to teach and host lectures alongside locum nursing all whilst travelling the UK in her campervan with her dog and cats.

Suturing practical with a presentation on all things schedule 3 and the needed information on performing surgeries for RVNS/SVNS. From the RCVS guidelines to the wound types and suture material needed to close each wound or incision.

Emma Hall – GradDipVN, NCert(AnBeh),VNCertECC, CertDent, CertVNES, CA-SQP, A1, IOSH,  Recover Rescuer Certified, RVN

Emma started her veterinary nursing career in 1996 at a busy mixed practice. She progressed through her SVN training, qualified then took on the head nurse role, then surgery manager to her current role of Group Nursing Manager for a group of 5 practices. Throughout her career Emma always has a thirst for knowledge and has collected many post grad certificates and loves to pass her newfound knowledge onto her team. She has this year gained her Recover rescuer certification and is keen to share this knowledge with all that will listen.

CPR: Basic Life Support Theory and Practice

15:00 – 16:00

During this session Emma will cover CPR.  This will include Basic Life support theory and practical as per Recover guidelines.

Learning Points:

1. Recover guidelines and how to identify patient in CPA

2. What is basic life support?

3. How to give chest compressions correctly – cat/different dog breeds.

4. Respiration – mouth to snout and via intubation
