The Purina Institute will share the latest updates on the diagnosis and management of myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) in a free symposium on Wednesday 23rd June. With talks delivered by world-class experts, the symposium will offer participants valuable clinical insights and present ground-breaking new research on the role of nutrition in helping to support the ailing heart. The event, which counts for 1.5 hours of free CPD, will run from 6pm–7:25pm on Wednesday 23rd June and all interested vets and vet nurses can attend the event at

Globally recognised speakers at the symposium include Dr John Bonagura DVM, DACVIM (Cardiology, Internal Medicine), who will share his expertise on the diagnosis and management of MMVD in dogs. His talk will cover topics of high clinical relevance including how to relate disease pathology to the findings on cardiac auscultation, and how to establish management approaches for the different stages of MMVD.
Following Dr Bonagura’s presentation, participants will hear from Dr Dottie Laflamme DVM PhD DACVN, an independent consultant and world-class expert in nutrition. Dr Laflamme will provide insights on nutritional management in canine heart disease and explain how the latest research indicates that key nutrients can slow the progression of MMVD in its early stages.1
These latest insights into the role of nutrition are based on cutting-edge metabolomics research conducted by Purina scientists. Dr Laflamme will discuss this research and subsequent clinical data, and participants will learn how dietary modification could form part of a comprehensive management plan for MMVD patients. After the talks, participants will gain the chance to quiz the experts in a live Q&A.
Dr Libby Sheridan MVB MRCVS, PURINA® Scientific Affairs Manager for the UK and Ireland, says that the company is pleased to support vets and nurses in practice with this high-quality free CPD. “MMVD is seen very commonly in practice, so this topic is really relevant for vets and nurses,” she says. “Traditionally dietary support for heart disease has centred on sodium restriction. This latest research is very exciting as it opens up possibilities for dietary support on a much more comprehensive scale. We’re delighted to offer this free symposium to help professionals keep up to date with the latest advances so they can provide the best possible care.”
The symposium will run live from 6pm–7:25pm on Wednesday 23rd June, and those interested can see the full agenda and attend the event here: https://www.purinainstitute.com/events/mmvd-webinar-June2021. For more information, contact the PURINA® Veterinary Nutrition Team on 0800 212161.
