This month Companion Consultancy, the PR, communications and marketing agency run by vets, celebrates its 20th birthday. It is offering veterinary practices and businesses a free 20 minute consultation about PR strategy to take advantage of its industry insights, specialist marketing expertise and resources to support the profession.
Founded by vet, Susan McKay in 2002, the agency started out with copywriting dedicated to companies who needed to communicate to people who own and care for animals. An expansion over the last year now allows Companion’s clients to benefit from the expertise of four vets working in the public relations and copywriting team, as well as experts in social media, digital and influencer marketing within the newly formed digital marketing team. The addition of an in-house design studio extends services to include graphic design, photography, video and podcasts, all specifically tailored for the vet, pet and animal health sectors.
During May, veterinary practices and businesses in the veterinary and animal health sectors can benefit from Companion’s experience during a free 20 minute chat about PR strategy to discuss the best ways to communicate with their target audience and manage the public perception of their company.
“Over the last 20 years, we have worked with clients ranging from one-man bands and new start-ups to some of the biggest veterinary companies in the UK and beyond. The vet sector has some distinctive differences to other audiences, and it is vital for businesses to get the tone and style of communications exactly right,” said Susan McKay, director of Companion Consultancy. “Although the world has changed a lot in the last 20 years, the core of veterinary communication is still credibility, integrity and clarity, so we always strive to find ways to communicate more effectively, and come up with new ideas to suit the evolving market that practices are operating in.”
A novel way that Companion aims to support the profession is through the Veterinary Woman initiative; resources and events aimed at inspiring women in the veterinary profession, increasing confidence, overcoming challenges and encouraging leadership aspirations. Founded by Susan in 2015, the mission is to create a place where equality is encouraged and women can source the information they need to help them reach their potential.
“I faced some tough challenges in my career; working as a vet in practice, in the nutrition sector and then setting up my own business, and I wanted to help encourage and inspire others in the profession by setting up Veterinary Woman. But the same holds true for Companion – we want to provide our clients with leading-edge veterinary-specific communications services which will help their businesses, and the people within them, to grow and thrive. It’s been my mission for the last 20 years, and I’m still just as passionate that it will continue for the next 20.”
